Hi, I am Brittany Wilson, an English Teaching Assistant (ETA) at Foundation for Scholarly Exchange (FSE, also known as Fulbright Taiwan). I am a poet and artist as well. My time as an ETA consists of fostering an environment of cultural exchange, collaboration, and multiculturalism with young students in grades 2 and 6. As a recent Millsaps College graduate, I am putting my B.A. in Creative Writing and B.S. in Mathematics to good use as my teaching style primarily focuses on storytelling, sharing cultural narratives through food and festivals. With two years of prior experience as an academic tutor supporting my peers' efforts in language learning and mathematics, I am honored that the Fulbright Program and FSE have chosen me as a recipient of such a prestigious grant.
My strengths in community building, intercultural leadership, and creative writing have been recognized by my alma mater, Millsaps, with the following awards: the Sherryl Wilburn Humanitarian Award (2023) and the Henry and Katherine Bellamann Award for Creative Writing (2024). My contributions to cultivating creative and social spaces on the college campus have led to me receiving a Fulbright U.S. Student Scholar grant to Taiwan.
In this blog, I will share my personal experience as a young Black Mississippian located on an island offshore of mainland Taiwan. This blog will include tidbits and advice on how to apply for a Fulbright, why I chose Fulbright, and my adventures as an ETA.
